chapter 1
I
I think we all take life for granted until something happens us do in the short term up and we take stock of what we have in life. For me, it all started with a hyena … Nay In fact, it not. It started before that date.
Every once they have been moments in their own words back to you? Each term, the head of a private school, primary in the farming town of Chipinge in southeastern Zimbabwe border Choose a keyword and based on my meetings around the word.
In mid 2003, he chose the word and challenges in the third quarter – Attitude. The stories, homilies, appointments, so I tell the kids no doubt I put up for my departure in 2004.
My daughter, Jenna called me by phone.
"Mom, you and Jim love to come to fish in the river for the new year?" Was the Zambezi River on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. My husband, Jim, chose not to join the party as he felt he had done enough to camp in their lives. He called me Jenna phone I like to tell him to go, but Jim would not. She laughed and said to his father, my first husband, Geoff, was to come, but his wife, April, No, exactly the same reason that Jim, Jim and asked if he would mind if I am Geoff was his. Well, nobody cared, it was beautiful.
About fourteen of us met in Harare in the sun, vehicles loaded with all our camping gear, rods Fishing, beer and wine, food and other essentials. In the spirit of good wonderful holiday, everyone in convoy Mongwa, thirty kilometers downstream from Chirundu, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, a very special and unique area of Zimbabwe – in fact, throughout the Zambezi Valley is spectacular. The first part of the trip makuti took a couple of hours on tar roads good. Then the wound our way in the Zambezi Valley, tar shrinks, more heat, until we turn on the road and down a path land winding through the forest dim. As this was the time rains, sometimes one of the vehicles that are floundering in the mud, we crossed rivers roads and elephants, and should be removed by one of the 4×4.
The convoy finally arrived at their destination after-noon an abandoned fishing camp that was raised by my step-son, Trevor, and some of his friends who had entered the partnership in the company. There were a number of these camps along the Zambezi, which was previously owned by white Zimbabweans. The owners had been expelled for 'freedom fighters and national parks took over the camps. Now seriously neglected, national parks invite those white Zimbo return to the camps to try to put them right again and encourage tourism. They could see the beauty of the evolution of the Zambian side River were and how they were popular for vacations and fishing trips and how tourists came to the area around the River.
This particular camp was established on the banks of the river in a steep slope. A very basic toilet block was perched on the top with spectacular river views, you can enjoy while taking a shower. Halfway down the slope was a ruined stone building of two floors with straw. Above is a large bedroom through the wall. On the ground floor and had a kitchenette and dining room. It was in really bad state of repair and needed a good cleaning, so that all has to do with brooms habitable. Trevor and Jenna went to sleep with their children and the rest of us raise our stores devoted to the riverbank. For now, beer and wine was flowing and the atmosphere was one level.
We have been an idyllic time for fishing, boating, eating, drinking, talking and just enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the African jungle – in banks of this incredible river. On 2 January, we spent the morning fishing, drifting the river for a drink in the evening, returned to camp, had a wonderful gourmet meal – the real solution to Zimbabwe had two cooks with us, even the production of bread every day.
We sitting around remember the good old, bad days, sipping a glass of wine or six, as is often the case, listening to the sounds of the night – high baboons barking, hoarse cough hyenas, lions and the occasional roar of the musical sound of Christmas beetles. All Simply beautiful!
Around 9:30 p.m. we all decided to retire at night. Is not it amazing how you tired of doing nothing all day? I settled into my little shop (one of these cases caused by man for midgets less). It was extremely hot and sensuous If after about one hour to go around, I decided to sleep on the sofa that was outside my tent. The store was too small to bed to fit inside! I must admit that I arranged my pillow and a blanket on the couch, thinking animals Indians came to me but he rejected the idea instantly settled and fell asleep.
At ten o'clock, midnight, I was shocked to enlightenment by the sound of crushed bones and smell more disgusting. Confused and disoriented, at first did not know what was happening, but I soon realized that the bones were crushed my bones, like a little hyena in my face and hands and began to crawl across the steep slope. "I screamed and screamed fighting desperately, as if my life depended on it – you would expect really – and thought my end had vision! It must have been a few seconds before the beast, when he realized he had eyes bigger than your stomach, let me go and disappeared into the night. As I made Kneeling on the ground, blood running down my face, I realized that my hands and feet always worked and I still could not do what it must be good!
I was a bit untidy. My eye was on my ear, my ear was suspended, my face was a bloody mess, my thumb was almost separated from my hand and my arm broken.
My step-son, Trevor Gilbert and a friend picked me and took me to the straw-shaped A, where I'm sitting in the light. My daughter and her friend Jenna, Kim, then I put together, clean all my wounds and bandages. What a terrible thing for girl to make your mother, but both she and Kim had splendidly. Fortunately, Trevor was one of those who must have Best of all, and what your first aid kit was the best on the market. Included drops of saline solution used to clean all my wounds.
They put me in the front passenger seat of a 4×4 which had been demolished. Geoff held my head and Trevor brought me back into the jungle to the hospital in Kariba city. I could hear and speak Trevor Geoff.
'Do not sleep, Geoff, "said Trevor." Has lost much blood, it goes into shock. "
Each elephant and his friend seemed to be on the track bush at night and were not too willing to off the road.
"Oh, no! Cria, Trevor," The Elies are blocking the road. It can not happen. "
"Just keep driving, "said Geoff always stoic. Trevor and miraculously the elephants were separated and that will happen.
Finally we arrived in Kariba at 2:30 am and met with the only piece of negativity that we encounter when nurses have a look right to me and said, "Maiwee, maiwee! You can not come here, we do not have the facilities. You have to go to Harare."
Harare has five hours by car.
Fortunately, two Cuban doctors appeared and I immediately put on a drip, administered pain medication, I given a tetanus shot, the vaccine against rabies and sewed my thumb, apologizing that they could not do anything to my face. They got really gave a good value of Z $ 120 which is what responsible government clinics at that time.
Meanwhile, after many phone calls, Trevor had taken possession of my sister, Barbara, Harare. Accessed March, Medical Air Rescue Service who have agreed to come get me. BUT, can you believe? As there was a "strike of air traffic controllers in progress, they have arisen in Lake Kariba, when light.
Trevor, meanwhile, went into town to find the airport manager of Kariba, who had the keys to the opening of the airport. After He turned many again with the keys of the administrator, the security gate! Just before the estimated time of arrival of the aircraft Trevor me to transfer to your car so that there would be no delays at the airport when the plane landed. In this case, staff Hospital refused to release because they were "responsible" for me and I had to travel in the ambulance to the hospital, but the pilot to "Jump Start" for them, after we found! Well, Trevor started out of the ambulance and said that in no case was his stepmother went straight into the trap of death! "It was really horrible, literally wired and worn tires on the metal! After much discussion, Trevor went to the airport to fetch the doctor and nurse them back to the hospital Kariba.
They were great, I was examined and accepted as I travel in 4×4 Trevor presence with them. At the airport, the pilot presented apologized for not arriving earlier. Has been installed shortly in the air ambulance and air. March physician and his sister were superb, very efficient and reassuring. During the flight by radio before the Avenues Clinic surgeon who are waiting for me and a plastic surgeon on standby.
From I arrived at the clinic, things were more or less agree with the telenovelas, which was given to physicians and surgeons, X-rays, prepared for the theater, operated, and then transmitted to the chamber. Contrary to what I had been led to believe that arrive in Zimbabwe at the time, my treatment and nursing was the best, and I have nothing but praise for all the people I hung out. All were highly skilled and very attentive. We were so happy in this country have been so dedicated and highly thought of specialists who practice there – not some of them still do.
Meanwhile, my poor husband, who was in Chipinge where we lived at the time, told my eldest daughter Alison, who lived on a farm in Middle Sabi, who was attacked and dragged into my head by a hyena, the message he had received. Fearing the worst, he packed his clothes and left for the funeral of Harare, planning my service and the choice of hymns road. It was really relieved to see him alive!
I'm sure I was in the middle of the prayer lists of the country when I arrived Harare, and probably most others by the time I was in the theater. He was surprised at how quickly news was widespread. I I'm living proof that prayers are answered. Since that time hyena let go, everything was positive.
I lost my eye, but the surgeon did reconnect my eyelid, which is a great advantage for holding the wrong view. I was hoping to find the tear ducts, but this was not true. After initially believed that having to do some skin grafts, but during the ten days of the second operation later found that none was necessary. My face, particularly the eyelid, was much swollen, which must be massaged for at least half an hour three times a day. This, to my husband. So I stay and enjoy the pleasures of tingling (note the letter "m") after stimulation of the face. It never ceases to amaze me with my recovery. After been for several neuro-scans, it appears that the nerves in both the face and hands have worked – more or less.
Man has managed to get my hand very bones graunched new and enhanced skills. It took three operations and six months, but I have almost completely backward movement. When I told him,
"Many Thanks, I was very worried for my part, his response was:
"So it was – but guess what? This has much to do with do the right thing. "- And he patted me on the head!
Fourteen operations later, I am surprised by my recovery and can not believe how much my face when I look back and remember how it was mutilated. My orbit was reconstructed, using the mucous membrane of the mouth, so that can hold a glass eye that looks good, but do not see too well.
worse things happen to others. I'm still alive. My injuries have could be much more terrible. The response from my family and friends and strangers have been wonderful. The prayers, support, greetings, flowers and gifts given to us for many has been overwhelming. People got together, which believes that huge sums of money to help my medical expenses. It seems very difficult to believe he had always been one of the people who organize this kind of thing.
Zimbabwe has been, and Besides, is still a society very careful to live People saw what he had to do and do. I returned to a freezer and refrigerator full and a house full of flowers and meals. My little school was in perfect working condition, knowing that it would be.
When something terrible you happens, makes you stop and take stock of everything you have. Lets put things in perspective and realize what's important in your life. Promised Land [CD-ROM] Queensryche’s follow-up to the double-platinum Empire is something of an acquired taste, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s considerable variety here; the heavy progressive-rock of “I Am I” and the ballad “Bridge” were hit singles, but there’s also the funk-inflected “Disconnected”, the edgy, spooky “Lady Jane”, and the piano-and-vocals “Someone Else?”. The title track is probably the stronge… |
