How to Practice Being a Video Game Tester
Did you know that you can actually practice to become a video game tester? No? Well, you’re in the same boat as many other gamers. The truth is that most gamers don’t know that it’s possible to test video games without being a paid video game tester. In order to practice, all you need to do is get your hands on a few games and a console to play them on; preferably a next-gen console.
“Alright, I got everything I need. Now What?” Basically, you just start playing. However, instead of playing the game for sheer enjoyment, you have to play the game from the perspective of a professional video game tester. A game tester views a testing assignment as a job. A task in which a game developer pays him to do, nothing more and nothing less. Admittedly, it may be somewhat difficult to get into this mindset the first couple of times, especially considering the fact that you have to pretend you’re being paid. Hopefully though, you won’t have to pretend for long.
Once you get into the “this is a job, not play-time” mindset, the act of testing becomes much easier. Does this mean you can’t have any fun while you test games? Not at all. It simply means you have have to prioritize work over fun when you’re being paid to test video games. Anyways…once you get into the right mindset, it will be time for you to get into “test” mode.
What is test mode, you ask? Well, it is basically a state that you’ll enter into when you begin testing video games. The best way to describe it is relaxation. You have to relax and allow yourself to take in the entire screen. If you can do that before beginning your testing session, you should be able to spot more bugs and glitches while playing. It may sound a bit weird, but it actually works.
If you are relaxed while playing a video game, your eyes will pick up on things they normally wouldn’t have otherwise. Why does this happen? Because your eyes begin to get accustomed to seeing specific things on-screen. It isn’t long before these things become second nature to you, as you expect to see them at every turn. Therefore, when something happens on the screen that is completely new to you, your eyes will usually dart to that location to see what has happened. This makes locating bugs/glitches much easier for the video game tester, as he will be in sync with the game and he’ll pick up on things that don’t really belong in the picture.
Aside from being able to spot bugs and glitches with more precision, relaxation also helps video game testers avoid the “bug & glitch” fever. If you are extremely eager to find bugs and glitches, you will probably end up finding a few, but you’ll find them in all the wrong places. What does that mean? Well, it means that you will be accusing everything you see as being a bug/glitch, whether or not it actually is one. And guess what, if you think you have found 100 different bugs, you’re going to have to fill out just as many bug reports. Can you imagine how chaotic that can get? It won’t be long before things get out of control, which will likely cause you to wonder why you even wanted a career as a professional video game tester. So, as you can undoubtedly tell, relaxation and game testing goes hand in hand.
In conclusion, be sure to take time out to practice your video game tester skills. However, it’s important not to forget to do the same for the sheer enjoyment of playing video games. You want to be a video game tester because you love to play video games, right? Well, in that case, don’t sacrifice your love for them just to overload yourself with practicing. After all, you’ll get all the practice you need when you get your first few video game tester jobs.

Promised Land [CD-ROM] Queensryche’s follow-up to the double-platinum Empire is something of an acquired taste, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s considerable variety here; the heavy progressive-rock of “I Am I” and the ballad “Bridge” were hit singles, but there’s also the funk-inflected “Disconnected”, the edgy, spooky “Lady Jane”, and the piano-and-vocals “Someone Else?”. The title track is probably the stronge… |
