Antique Spike Nails – Using Vintage and Antique Nails
The history of nails dates back thousands of years and throughout time their purpose has remained the same – fastening and joining two pieces of lumber together. Originally each nail was made by hand from heated iron ore and then cut and shaped during cooling. The first evidence of large scale nail making dates back to the Roman Empire where blacksmiths in fortresses would make nails by the thousands. Nails were so valuable that later American colonists would burn down abandoned buildings to collect the nails left behind in the ashes. It wasn’t until the 1600’s the first machine was created to automate the nail making process but even then it could still only produce one nail at a time. It wasn’t until the early 1800’s that nail making became a more efficient process and that nails became available in different sizes.
Using antique reproduction spike nails in your home is a wonderful and timeless addition. Not only are these nails extremely durable but they add a sense of history to any room. This is especially important in restoration projects where using nails similar to the originals is vital to preserve the integrity of the original architectural style. Available in a variety of sizes, nails use a small “d” to designate length (although the d was originally used to designate price per hundred). Today nails are typically sold per pound, not by count.
Antique reproduction spike nails are produced today – allowing you to incorporate them easily into your home. When choosing spike nails for your home, be sure to follow a few simple steps. First, select a size and finish appropriate for your project. Nails are available in a standard or galvanized (protects against corrosion) finishes. Second, replace the older and worn hardware in your home with new doorknob sets, window hardware and lighting to create a common theme. By using iron hardware on your doors, windows and cabinets you can tie the look together. Consult home decorating catalogs or an interior designer if you have additional questions.
Antique spike nails are readily available online as well as in many home decorating catalogs. Search for solid iron construction and be sure to ask questions. Nails are available in a variety of styles and not all nails are meant for the same projects. These antique spike nails are available online through LookInTheAttic & Company and they offer free design assistance and help.

WTT my 1977 Olds Omega v6 (refurbished) for an approx. 30ft sail boat?
is it a fair trade? i recently invested a bunch of time and money into my Omega. its gotten a full body restoration and fully rebuilt v6 231ci motor. this car is truly an American classic in good stock condition. i can still see it becoming my project car, as i recently stored it and decided to drive my pick up full-time. i am looking forward to living on the water somewhere mild though and would consider trading my car for something around a 30ft live-in sail boat in good condition and running order… would it be a fair trade? i’d think its justifiable but i would like some more opinions before i put more thought into it. thx.
LOL Good Luck! Dont ever stop dreaming!
If you ever do find that deal, Beat Feet!
