A first time triathlete Guide What is important to prepare for her first triathlon
I did my first triathlon in Marin Triathlon in 2008 and I wanted to share my experience to any other triathletes for the first time. It was a very rewarding experience for me still gives chills just thinking about it. I think most anyone can do a triathlon, if they put their body and mind to it. In the survey a triathlon, you're bombarded with information. I want to share what I did and what I discovered was important for me.
Although triathlons I researched quite extensively before making my first, I am not an expert. I am only sharing my experiences to help give you a perspective that can help you. Follow the instructions and consult a doctor before trying. Your mileage may vary.
Learn the basics
My wife bought me two books. One of them has been Triathlon Training fours per week (by Eric Harr) and the other book Triathlon Magazine in its entirety triathlete. I also found many good resources online. The Eric Harr book that I thought was best for me. It was really the conversation and spoke to me as a first step. I recommend this book.
I also found YouTube is a tremendous resource for instructional videos on just about anything. If you search in the triathlon will see a lot of free videos of teaching, many coaches and triathletes champion on how to run, bike and swim faster and better. There are many instructional videos on how to define transition zone effectively. You can also see what looks like a triathlon early and the number of people during a career transition.
The most useful videos that have been found in the swimming technique. I knew how to get through a pool, but did not know how to do it effectively. Learning swims well, and then try to get in the pool really helped improve my swimming efficiency. If I had to redo it, I would have taken a master's swimming. I improved my efficiency by 20-30% only improve my swimming technique. I used less energy and reduce my pain to swim to a position long after learning to swim better (later).
Acquisition of equipment
For cycling, I needed to get new equipment to get started. After months of research, I decided to trek in 1000. I bought the previous model year and got a good discount on it (I ended up paying $ 600 again.) I had to buy another computer as a set of tools, bicycle spare tube, bottle cage, water, air pump (or you can decide to use CO2 cartridges), cycling shirt and trousers Triathlon (the guy who has some type of filling, but are made of quick drying material). People say I really need to use pliers and cycling can increase your efficiency by 20-25%. I used an ordinary shoebox and rolled into my running shoes. This seems to be well and made me very fast T2 time because all I had to do was to leave the bike, I take my helmet, stretching your legs and just go.
I already had a good pair of running shoes, so I do not need a lot there. Also, I intend to use the same clothes as the bike, then you do not need new clothes.
Swimming can be very expensive. If you make a swim in cold water, you might consider a wetsuit. After much research, I found the best price in two places. Sports Basement has a good rental program where you can rent a combination of high quality for $ 20 a day. Staff sales is well known – in fact the person who helped me with my coach hire triathletes I made him some good advice. The best place for rent in my opinion is Fit 2 Race (www.f2r.com). The people are super nice, super helpful and the prices are very reasonable. I rented a costume I think for 30 days for $ 50 (including the cost of sending the further back after the race). They have nice clothes, a quick and if you decide to buy can apply the rental fee for their costumes for a very reasonable price. Try them. Is this a good program, especially if you are unsure of making the investment in your own costume.
I found it very useful to take a lesson in open water swimming. Www.swimart.com I took a class that I really helped to understand what open water swimming was. If all that mitigated many of my fears. So I decided to go and take class, I enrolled in my triathlon few weeks later, knowing that I could manage the cold water, knowing the techniques I need to know and passed through a dip or two in practice Aquatic Park. Leslie Thomas is the owner of the swimming and art is an excellent instructor. I have a course and a group of swimming and some of my own to swim and I swim Arts
In conjunction with the equipment, classes, registration, clothing, food career that has probably spent about $ 1,200 and was very cheap (and the rental of a combination maintenance free). The bulk of expenditure was on the bike course. Registration for this race was over $ 200 Eco.
See also the course when you get a chance. I drove the course the day before and better than I could predict how I spent my energy. I noticed the cycle and run was a lot of hills which are the beginning and end of each section. I measured my energy a lot better knowing that.
Training
I was surprised that my body was able to complete the required distances individually. I could run six miles and have done so many times in the past, so I did not worry too much about the game. I was worried about the bike and swim party since they never really went anywhere near space requirements.
I think for most people is a matter of mind over matter. Build yourself slowly and you'll probably find that you can manage these distances at a rate comfortable atmosphere. Over time, you can work to improve their time once you have the confidence to know that you can complete. I never thought I could do laps in the pool 80x25m, but once you find a comfortable rhythm and style, you can. To my practice sessions, I ended up training 2 km swim and it took me about 40-45 minutes. To achieve this level took me about 4-5 sessions training. I swam a mile every time I went to the waterpark open water so I knew he would be able to do swim and be at ease with the sea, swimming in near zero visibility.
The technique has been very important here. I realized that I can not swim "Largo" and "flat". When you get a little more and increase my butt a little higher than usual makes me less friction. So I was not quite Mobile as part of my race. I found that if you slip (almost like a smock) I had the opportunity to swim with more power and less energy. The biggest improvement for me was swimming career at the end of my race. I tended to lift their hands out of the water too early and not let my hand touch my leg before leaving the bottom. I changed my style to push down on the last part surprised me (Almost as if something pushed down), then brush my hand on my thigh to make sure I did my full stroke. That really helped Efficiency my career immense. They always say swimming is all about technology and I do not experience until you're one of those improvements.
Focusing bricks in training. The transitions between swimming and cycling and bike to run are extremely critical. Cycling to run (or T2) is particularly important because it is when your body wants to rebel. After being on a bike for a while and then lowered to run is very difficult. The legs do not want to work right and sometimes takes half a mile to a mile until you feel like hitting a stride decent career. The more you practice this, more at ease with him. And it is less likely that you are injured. I am sure he could make a 25-mile bike / 6 mile run in practice before I was sure that would finish the race.
Do not swim to bike transitions mainly because it was convenient for me to do. If I ran the race, I found that after the swim, I was a little tired of being horizontal, vertical, then okay, but not much. I kept it easy and try not to look like Superman going to swim to the transition area. My T1 time was fairly quick (within minutes) except that I felt I was going slower than it was not.
A key tips for the race!
I saw that it was super-critical questions about swimming before the route race. When the tides in the game is really feasible in a hole if nothing wrong direction. There were high tides (especially for us) in the Marin Triathlon, however, otherwise the move right, this could be your worst enemy. We were facing a right to the great tide of left (if you look at the coast), in order to turn around the first buoy, I really had to turn right to turn. I followed the advice and pulled around the first mark well. What nobody told me it was to do with the second buoy was a little further and I missed the float for only about two meters. But it was too late. The tide swept me and I had to swim against the tide back around the second buoy to avoid being disqualified. Well, I had never experienced swimming against strong currents, because I had done everything in my practice of swimming in swimming pool and water park in San Francisco, which has a wall around most of the bathing area. He felt very bad. The buoy, literally, it seemed like an engine and was Motorboard away from me at a good pace. I have given added impetus and swam like a hot (drink a little water in the process) and, finally, it is around, but it takes a lot of energy. I was surprised by the powerful tides could be. When people tell me that you can not do, or negative progress on a strong tide, I got 100%. I felt almost helpless on the strength of tide. Since then, I respected a lot more oil and gave me a good distance around the buoys, but without the knowledge of the tides is blind.
Follow your own pace and in swimming because things always look closer than they are. You think you're near the finish line and you wonder why you so long to get there. The practice of comments is really important. I am not a good look terrible, but the basics have practiced some both helped me in the rectilinear motion. Ask around for the road you need to swim in the race. Otherwise, look around wondering why the there are swimmers, and why these people are swimming by. You may be confused about the right thing to do. He became the head several times whether I was on the right track or not.
Another quick story. Remember I told you first buoy. Well a group of swimmers led more to the left while a good portion of people followed the advice and went so far right they could. Those who aspired to the left seemed to reach the buoy much faster and seemed to have an advantage over the competition. When they hit the current, struggling to recover strongly around the buoy. Because was first and I was timed in division 40, we saw the first two groups and how they approached the first buoy, I could hear the laughter of the most experienced triathletes you are looking for people who have decided to cut a path straight to the first buoy. "See the burn all that energy into the first corner laughed them. All Swimming head right.
Although I was informed of all the bumps and bruises during the swim start, I was not so bad. I started a little behind when I met people and crashed, everybody was there to have fun and not a big deal. Just keep calm and I know that everyone is in the same boat. If you feel someone touching the leg or the accident that someone in front of you, do not panic. It would be very rare to have it worse than what people warned about and your not in the elite group anyway.
During the bike leg is very easy to spend lot of energy to a good time. If you have a good resistance that is a good thing to do. However, if not a great runner, you need to keep Energy for the last two miles on the track. I eyed when I was on the bike and probably pushed a little faster than expected. Fortunately, there are injured during the race mainly because I felt my legs were very tired after three miles of the race.
An Observation I made during the race, is that each course has its own psychology. In Marin, was a corporal and of course we will return what it means and out the same way. Just as there was a period of five to six miles on the bike, the elites were already beginning to return. This was not as bad as the start of the race where people were finishing the race just as you began your strenuous six miles. Was depressing for some time watching all the people to return and finish the race as he was starting. In a race a few laps, I'm sure there are similar feelings to those around you.
Nutrition during the race
You could probably do a good training, even without drinking or eating. In a triathlon that burns a lot of energy and can literally run out of gas, which "bonking." I was surprised by the number of athletes can eat during an event. A cyclist eats everything I know about the site during the season rest. He eats a sandwich or two and Goo Powerbars and eats and drinks constantly. Finding what your stomach can endure for intense activity and eating lots of it. I close for the first time in years at km third of my career. This same rider also recommended for pills Enduralyte cramps. I wish I had taken some but I was still able to work for my cramps.
For I Clif Goo. Most are organic and have no hazardous chemicals. It seems that digest very well and are easy to store and eat.
Couple of other tips.
I hear static stretching is not really good for you and, in fact, may increase your risk of injury .. NYTimes has an article subject. It is therefore preferable to the heat of dynamic stretching – or basically just to keep warm. Some people go swimming or shopping future. For me, it does not work – just makes me more tired.
An interesting tip of others who have worked for me when I cramp when I was stopped and massage. It works wonders against stretch or do something else. Forced to eat at intervals regularly is also essential to ensure that they will not have the energy or cramping. As mentioned earlier, I heard people swear by Enduralytes if I'm tested once.
Also be as fast as you can in the career. You'll be hyped you want to go faster than I expected. In addition, the shape is likely to go out the window. Try working a bit and focus a little form. I took stock of a couple of times during the race thinking – Hey, it's great – I'm competing in a triathlon. Nothing like that in the moments before the race start swimming and cycling. Enjoy the scenery, relax a little and enjoy. A triathlon is a sprint, after All you must make sure that everything is good for you through the rhythm.
It is a community
I did not done much bike riding and I certainly never hung out with the triathlon community, but people who are punished by the practice of these sports are truly a community group closely linked. When cyclists have a flat tire, you will not believe how often invite others to stop and help. And I like giving advice to others and help them. Really exploit the power knowledge. In addition, training triathlon, which can be annoying, it is So good to have a partner or two long bike rides, races and nothing (although the swimming is a bit monotonous). You can use a solution like href = "http://www.qlubb.com/"> Qlubb organize (where I work) and training sessions to plan and share photos from the event later.
Remember to continue to work later. You're probably in the best shape of your life. The force also retained.
After getting the finish line at the party! The feeling is exhilarating and surprisingly you want to register for the next.

Promised Land [CD-ROM] Queensryche’s follow-up to the double-platinum Empire is something of an acquired taste, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s considerable variety here; the heavy progressive-rock of “I Am I” and the ballad “Bridge” were hit singles, but there’s also the funk-inflected “Disconnected”, the edgy, spooky “Lady Jane”, and the piano-and-vocals “Someone Else?”. The title track is probably the stronge… |
