How do you install stuff onto the gunwale?
I have a Lowe 1467WT. This is an aluminum V-Hull fishing boat. How would you properly/safetly install something like a cleat, oar locks or a rod holder onto the gunwale?
Aluminium alloys are a group of metals which work well in a marine environment because they form a tough oxidized layer. Where metals are used in a marine environment it is always best to keep variety to a minimum. And where a combination is present, to ensure that metals are as similar as possible in the galvanic series. Particularly with alluminium.
Oddly though, stainless steel works well with alluminium because although it is not close to it in the galvanic series, like the latter, it resists corrosion by forming a tough oxidized layer and the two layers react well together.
You can install either alluminium or stainless steel fittings to your gunwale using either alluminium, stainless steel or monel fastenings (don’t use alluminium fastenings on a stainless steel fitting) including self-tapping screws, m/c screws and back-nuts where accessible, or by drilling and tapping where not. All, of a size as appropriate to the fitting concerned. Use a thread-lock fluid with m/c screws. On the nuts or tapped threads.
With alluminium fittings, you can also weld them on to the hull you describe. Use metal-inert gas and a continuous weld. While it might be considered unsightly on some cruising yachts, welding is particularly appropriate on a fishing vessel, as well as being extremely reliable and safe. Keep the job cool during the operation, to avoid distortion of the gunwale.
