Considering Buying An Auto Battery Charger
If you’re considering buying an auto battery charger, you’re on the road to making a great purchase. People depend on their cars more than ever and if you’ve ever tried to start a car with a dead battery, you know how important it is to be armed with a device such as an auto battery charger. The feeling of worrying about how you’re going to arrive at your destination would be quickly tempered by the knowledge that you own a device that could help you be on your way within a matters of minutes; even under the worst conditions.
The manufacturers of auto battery chargers are offering many improved styles and it’s easy to find one that will fit your needs. Many chargers can be used not only to charge your car but for campers, boats and other recreational vehicles as well.
Some car owners dispose of what they think are dead batteries, but the battery actually has at least half of its life left. Disposing of these batteries isn’t eco-friendly or economical. An auto battery charger that is a newer model and that has an intelligent charging system will let you know how much life your car battery still has and can even lengthen its life. Some styles even have a sleep mode that keeps the battery charger quiet.
If you choose to purchase an auto battery charger that doesn’t have as many “bells and whistles” it will work just as well, but not as quickly or as quietly. It can take two or more hours to charge your car battery and usually a blinking light will let you know when the battery is fully charged. Some brands don’t have an automatic shut off so you’ll need to watch it carefully. Many auto battery charger models have a trickle charger function that will feed your battery slowly at a self-discharge rate. A battery can be left indefinitely in a trickle charger. This is good to use during cold weather.

My trolling motor boat battery takes over 18 hours to charge before it is even full. What is wrong?
Well, I accidentally bought a boat deep cycle starting motor battery for my boat’s trolling motor instead of a trolling battery for it 3 years ago. I have two battery chargers, and when I use either one to charge my trolling motor battery, it takes over 18 hours to have a full charge. What is wrong? Is the battery not good or something, or is it because I am using a deep cycle boat motor starter battery for my trolling motor?
It’s calcified. A deep cycle battery is what you want. Try buying a ‘fancy’ digital charger that specifically says it can recondition old batteries. The high freq. pulses of high voltage can break up the crust that accumulates on the lead plates of the battery. (full disclosure, I have a Vector battery charger and it has brought a marine deep cycle, lawn tractor, and motorcycle battery back from the dead. It has more than paid for itself.)
